Big Sur Travel Guide: Discovering Coastal Wonders and Hidden Gems

It was a few days before our anniversary! Yes!! Our 6 years anniversary! I have been married to this guy for 6 years now. And we usually travel to another state/country but this time we were out of our PTO from work, so we thought lets make a anniversary weekend trip to coastal town of Big Sur on pacific coast highway.

Pacific Coast Highway, also called PCH, is one of the most popular beautiful coastal highway in the world. I have driven it quiet a few times and explored most of the small towns on its way. PCH begins from San Juan Capistrano in Southern California and ends at US 101 in Mendocino county. In my future blogs, I will talk about other beautiful towns I have been to, this post is dedicated primarily to Big Sur.

Big Sur is about ~150 miles south of San Francisco and takes about 3 hours to get there. It can take more time depending upon the time of the year and time of the day because just like us, there are a lot of other people driving the beautiful highway.

Weather
All year the weather mostly remains the same. It ranges from upper 40’s to lower 70’s, which means you always need a light jacket or a hoodie.

What I packed for early December

  • Definitely not shorts!! long pants/active leggings
  • hat/beanie
  • light jacket/hoodie
  • chapstick is a must, it gets too dry in cold windy area

Where we stayed?
We stayed at Ripplewood Resort. It is right off highway 1 and my review of the resort is here. These are rustic looking cabins a little further down from the highway, which means no noise of the highway at night. Our’s was close to the big sur river and only thing we could hear was the sound of the creek at night.

There are a lot of other places to stay. Next time I visit, I will reserve a campsite at Big Sur Campgrounds and Cabins just because I love camping.

Where we ate?
We tried bunch of different places, though, like always, we had our portable stove with propane cylinders. We ate at the Ripplewood Resort Cafe. Their coffee is good and its a pretty good place to eat at any time of the day.

Nepenthe is another place where I would go for sunset drinks. They have an outside patio and you can take beautiful pictures of sunset here. Their bread is amazing and you can ask for more if you love it too.

Big Sur Bakery is also very popular among tourists and locals. I think they have one oft best pizzas I have ever had.

What we did?
One of the most popular is the Bixby Bridge. It is about 10 miles north of big sur. I met many people who were visiting from other countries and they were talking how much they have heard of the PCH and Big Sur.

McWay falls is another point of interest, located in the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. The 80 foot waterfall directly cascades into the ocean, We went there around sunset time and were able to capture a sunset photo. It isn’t my best sunset photo but still.

We took our bikes with us and rode along the highway. There are no dedicated bicycle paths but you can ride on the shoulder but there were some spots where riding on the shoulder wasn’t possible because of construction. People drive pretty fast on the highway so be careful!!

We also went for a small hike in Andrew Molera State Park. You can park up alongside highway 1 or can park in their designated parking lot. There are horse rides you can enjoy, but that is not available in December.

So, start packing and you know where you can adventure next!! Until next time! Thank you for reading.
